it's just a ride

Life, it’s ever so strange
It’s so full of change
Think that you’ve worked it out
then BANG
Right out of the blue
Something happens to you
To throw you off course
and then you

Breakdown
Yeah you breakdown
Well don’t you breakdown
Listen to me
Because

It’s just a ride, it’s just a ride
no need to run, no need to hide
It’ll take you round and round
Sometimes you’re up
sometimes you’re down
It’s just a ride, it’s just a ride
don’t be scared
don’t hide your eyes
It may feel so real inside
but don’t forget it’s just a ride

Truth, we don’t wanna hear
It’s too much to take
Don’t like to feel out of control
So we make our plans
Ten times a day
And when they don’t go
our way we

Breakdown
Yeah we breakdown
Well don’t you breakdown
Listen to me
Because

It’s just a ride, it’s just a ride
no need to run, no need to hide
It’ll take you round and round
Sometimes you’re up
sometimes you’re down
It’s just a ride, it’s just a ride
don’t be scared
don’t hide your eyes
It may feel so real inside
but don’t forget it’s just a ride

Slowly, oh so very slowly
except that
there’s no getting off
So live it, just gotta go with it
coz this ride’s, never gonna stop

Breakdown
Don’t you breakdown
No need to breakdown
No need at all
Because

It’s just a ride, it’s just a ride
no need to run, no need to hide
It’ll take you all around
Sometimes you’re up
sometimes you’re down
It’s just a ride, it’s just a ride
don’t be scared now
dry your eyes
It may feel so real inside
but don’t forget enjoy the ride

-Jem

hello all! i heard that you guys have got your results back, and for those of you who haven't done as well as you hoped to, take heart that it's only the first term, and so much more can happen in the next three. after all, everyone falls, and it's better sooner rather than later:) all you gotta do now is work super hard, and study CONSISTENTLY and focus more on studies than on play. of course i don't mean you ONLY study la. all work and no play makes everyone dull and boring and no fun at all. haha. and for those of you who did really well, don't take a seat back and think you don't have to work as hard ok? a one time hit is no matter if it goes downhill from there:)

of course, if u have been reading my blog, you'd kinda figure that i'm not quite practicing what i'm preaching. but that's different ok. why? just cause i say so. muahaha.

life's been busybusybusy with uni and out of school stuff. NOT boyfriend. haha. but assorted gatherings, and reunions and concerts (not rock. i missed fall out boy:P) and guests and all this other stuff that has kept me quite busy. i've even cut down DRASTICALLY on my tv watching (gasp!) but it's ok i guess. gives me less eyebags;) i miss you guys tons, and there hasn't been one day when i haven't thought about you guys. wah, sounds so romantic, but you know what i mean right. haha. i love you guys muchos! :)

hmph.

i am raging! i am raging against bl**dy blogger that is forcing me to use the new google thing! i hate being forced into anything and i hatethemhatethemhatethem!

and what's with the word verification thing below this man. SO irritating how do i get rid of it! i don't even understand why the stupid words have to be slanted and all. HONESTLY.

ok rant done. it's early morning and this is about the only time i have to update. so much for holidays huh. haha. can i just repeat OHMAN i am so glad for the holidays. :D:D

ok but for you all (ok me too laaaa) study hard ok! take this time to catch up on all your work (yeah right. but at least it sounds good to preach. hurhur.) and eat and drink and make merry and earn yourselves lots of money that can go into either your accounts or wonderful shopping treats! :D

whaddya know

happy (belated) valentine's day!
happy friendship day!

happy chinese new year!

right that's a lot of !!! at a go:)
hello all i am ecstatic! why? cuz hello hello holidays are FINALLY here. we barely ever get them in uni, dastardly things that they are.
ok not really FINALLY here, seeing how i still have school today. and lots of work to do before i go because the tutor demands it. but i also have the answers (YAYYYY!!!) and that just makes life so much easier:)

ok i just read what i typed and i sound high. or something to that effect.

so how was valentine's day for you all? DON'T LIE ok i know you all like someone. maybe they like you too, so i hope you let them know while you can! haha. what did you do for people, and what did they do for you? details, details! gimme the details! haha:)

eh i'm not kidding ok. i'm still KPO. haha:)

in other news, i've been busybusybusy with what also i don't know. so let's not even get there. haha. i miss u all la where have you all been? (ok i know you're in school but otherwise? like what's up with you all and stuff man.) how are your new classes and teachers and things you're learning? i love sec two work man. haha. i bet you hate it right, but it's ok. when you are sec three you will think just like me;)

o level results out! ok i know a whole week ago but so exciting right. all of you should try to sneak in the hall one time before you are actually the ones collecting the results. you know, brace yourself and all. it's very cool stuff. it's loads of tension and stress and then tears and laughter and heartbreaks and joy. very atmospheric. if there's such a word. haha.

ok can you all meet me SOON please thank you i miss you all and i'm too scared to go back ahs.

muacks!

a belated very merry christmas and happy new year to you all! :)

i'm supremely touched that some of you still visit this place. thought it was left to rot and neglect, but some of you still tag! much loves!

what have you guys been upto? i try visiting your blogs, but i've been quite tight on time these hols, and for some reason, some of your blogs make my windows close!:( still. am going to update myself on your lives NOW!

me, i've been having hols, and very happy with them so far. am quite sick of shopping now, since like, walking around the whole day and buying far less than you hope/expect to is enough to deter you. but there's been work besides that (with hilarious results too, but that's another story), and lots of catching up and meeting up with friends who've come back for the hols from overseas unis, with my ns friends, people from other singapore unis, and generally people i don't regularly meet but who have made an impact enough on my life to meet up with again:)

which brings me to. you guys. i love you all, yes, ALL of you, even if i scolded you before, or didn't really talk to you before, because you guys made my ahs experience a great one, and because seeing any of you outside, i immediately brandish my camera (hp or digital) so i can keep the memory.

and i don't know if this blog will be regularly updated, partly because well, i don't think many people read it at all, and partly because you guys aren't going to be in sec 1 anymore (right?). so after much consideration, i'm giving you guys my other blog address, which is quite new, but so far, been limited to very few peoples' knowledge. and not updated much at all either, because i'm such a very lousy internet blogger.

aprilsrain.blogspot.com

don't ask for the old one, because i've all but wiped it out. for those of u who still come here, i WILL still update this (i hope!) and more than that, thanks so very much for still visiting. i love you guys, can't get enough of saying it;)

it's been quite a long post ah, but there's more ok. makes up for the lack thereof sofar.

the year is ending. been a very quick year for me, with stuff zooming by, and a life lived as different as can be from previous years. my whole life i've been in some school or other, very standard, with uniforms and fixed classes and ccas and that kind of thing. this year i took my first steps into the working world, first at a hotel, and then at a bank, and finally, and the best of all, teaching. roles were reversed; once a student, now i was a teacher. and how. at a school so very different from my own, but with the best kind of pupils i could ask for. i may be mere years older than you all (six) but i hope i was not a bad teacher at all, and i know as the years go by, these memories will fade but i will always remember you all:)

then came uni, with no uniforms, fixed classes, fixed anything, actually. you make the timetable, you choose the classes, everything pointed to the message to grow up already:P well we all know what a pain that is.

results wise, this year, getting my a level results was also something different. all through, i managed to pull through at the major exams, but my results this time were far from satisfying, and well. i guess stuff doesn't always go the way you want, but what i learnt was that if you really want somthing, you have to work for it, and after a certain time, you won't get what you want just like that, effortlessly. it's been one of the worst chapters of my life, but it's done and over with, and all i can do is try not to think about it:P

but then you realise that the only way from up is down, and once you're at a low, you can only go up. those of you who may have not gotten as great results as you'd hoped for this year, take heart, because the rest of your life is not affected by this, and because, believe it or not, everyone falls. at some point in life, and best if earlier in life, everybody fails at something that means a lot to them. the only way to go from there is up, and nobody is alone in this. even my friend who clinched the top scholarship in singapore and is now in the UK (oxford, to be precise), is struggling, when all her life has been smoothsailing and full of perfect results. in short, never lose faith and hope, in yourself, and in situations, because it can get better.

have you guys been regrouped into different classes or is the new system rejected? ihope ihope ihope you guys stick together! :):)

well, been a fairly long lecture from me, but i guess i just want to thank you guys at the end of the year for a great time teaching, for a whole lot of wonderful memories, and for being such great people. i'm also sorry i've been such a lousy teacher and haven't kept to my word of updating this, but i hope u remember me the way i remember you all:) it's been, well, a different sort of year, but brightened up with you guys, and i'd like to wish you a belated merry christmas, and a very very blessed new year.

much loves, and keep in touch with me whenever you want to! :)

hello hello all i miss you tons!

thank you 1K for inviting me to your halloween bash, and i'm really very sorry i couldn't make it. i promise, though, that i will appear for the BBQ:)

now that it's holidays (for YOU all) i hope you're having a superduperultratrooper fun time slacking away at home or whiling your time away outside. now's the time to make merry before you all change classes next year, for who knows just what tomorrow brings?

nonetheless, i hope you all stay in close touch, if not with the whole class, then at least with your closer friends in class:)

i really have left this blog to stagnation, haven't i? been super busy with uni and all its work (hooboy u haven't seen work till u've been to uni!) but i am in lecture now. i need to stay awake you see;)

will really try to update more, and am very sorry there's nothing exceptionally fun or exciting to read here, but thanks to those of you who have still tagged, or read this even today. i love you guys! :) maybe. if there's enough of you who read this i should change the site from sec1ahs to somethingelse that will transcend time:)

ok back to lecture!

you lucky people you

can i say i am jealous. you have no more exams till.....next year!

sorry i haven't been updating in the longest time but i had exams, have them currently, and will be having them because even though they call this our mid term exams they seem to be going on and on and on..

exams are a different thing. but then there's the presentations and assignments and i have no idea why i picked such HEAVY classes this semester i could shoot myself. in case you didn't know, you get to choose your classes to a certain extent every semester in uni.

i'm also suffering from a backlog of readings, but even though i promise myself to start on them i get online and never leave till the bed calls. rah! so you see, once u procrastinate, u always procrastinate.

enough about my uni woes. OBVIOUSLY you all would be more than fine, more than ever super duper happy seeing how you have free time to do whatever you want to do, like playstation and other technologically advanced stuff i have no clue about.

shall be dropping by ahs, very soon hopefully. until then, have fun at your post exam activities and feel free (by this i mean YOU BETTER) to email/msg me your results, just because i am very kpo;)

have fun, and all the best!

p.s. what happened to the splitting of classes? any reversal in decisions?

anws im really hungry right now but i have to brush my teeth first and for that i have to get up and im too lazy. and i'm at a friend's place(after a sleepover la u) so everyone say hi to ROSHNI!:)

tagboard up!

as you should be able to see (ok maybe you'll have to scroll down a tiny weeee bit), there is a tagboard up. haha so exciting.

eh i'm a techno toot ok.

BUT i cannot possibly claim credit for it because i had nothing to do with it. i'd like to give this honour instead to Jia Ye of 1K. She helped me put it in the code stuff of the template that just looks like nonsense to me. Thanks girl!

uni. haiz. is terribly busy. there are hundred of pages to read weekly. you all better start learning to love english and reading NOW itself.

last day of holidays. sigh. i feel for you, because even though i didn't have any week long holiday i TREASURE the weekend i've got off and i'm almost dreading tml. those of you who haven't finished holiday hw, i also know how u feel. i have assignments due and i haven't started on them yet.

here's to the last 4 minutes of my holiday:)

Thursday, September 07, 2006

happy holidays much anyone?

it's that time of the year again, where they disguise intensive studying at home/lib/wherever else may suit your fancy in the form of holidays. now if you haven't been devoting most of your day the past few days to the aforementioned activity, then tsk, you're disappointing the directors of education, and you should be banned from any form of holiday granted very graciously to you.

AND you'll be expected to feel remorse for your actions thereafter.

but on a less retarded side, how has your studying been going on? i know you had english paper one, and just when you think you finished the worst of it, there's paper two, maths, science, and other assorted nightmares you will have to face come two and a half weeks.

i'd almost feel bad for you, really i would, if not for the knowledge that you all will definitely survive sec sch (and trust me it gets harder the higher you go. ask your sec 4s), and not just survive, but you will pass out spectacularly:)

still, steering away from the long-yet dreams of no more school/exams for a bit, if any of you need help in anything, be it english, nonenglish, nonchinese, and other educational issues, feel free to call/msg/email at any time you'd like. as a certain fella from 1C tried, you can call me late at night, for it is not so late for me at all, and you'd probably end up catching me awake instead of bewildered from being suddenly awakened.

now. the topic that's been weighing on my mind every wed, till thursday.
SINGAPORE IDOL.

everyone reading this, whip out your phone and
call 1900 112 1902 or SMS “2” to 43657
Those of you who watched it last night, jasmine has improved tons:) on the other hand, so have the others too, but still:)
five words:
subterfuge
clique
proliterate
wizened
culminate
i apologise if any of the words have come here before and i'm using them again. i'm not too sure who really does this anymore at all, but i'm hoping that one of these may just one day appear in your vocab section, or you find the word relevant for use in a compo:)

i'm talking about love

it has come to my attention that some of you -clears throat- are in the process of getting attached. there are many steps to this, and many different ways, but quite frankly, unless it's a guy or girl who has MY approval, i'd rather there be only ONE way.

step 1. get to know each others names
step 2. hang out as a group
step 3. realise you like each other because of personality, rather than just looks, status (eg position in class), cool factor, etc.
step 4. tell me and await approval
step 5. keep hanging out as a group for 10 years. chances are, by then, you'd have moved on, or at least been more reasonably sure that he/she is THE ONE or at least someone you love, rather than just like or are infatuated with.

ok i'm kind of joking. i say kind of because i'm not entirely joking.
;)

forget valentines day, teachers day is coming up soon. depending on what time the celebrations are, i'm not sure if i can drop in. am hoping i can though, because i miss u guys tons, but in the mean time and urging miss ang to drop by.

teachers make a world of difference. currently, i'm considered ur friend and not teacher so i have to right to say anything i want. and u can call me meghna;)

but honestly, i didn't believe it till JC. there was this teacher i absolutely disliked, and very reasonably too. i disliked his lessons, i paid little attention to them and in the end i suffered in my grades.

so if you want to show your teachers ur appreciation, trust me, doing your best in your studies is the best way to show your love and appreciation.

take care, and have fun at the celebrations! i hope i can make it there:):)

university tales

hello all!

am currently in the middle of a seminar in nus and my mind is quite frankly pooped. maybe its cuz i havent used it much in the past six months but the sociology lecture was quite mind numbing, i suppose smtg like what u'd find your worst subject in school. i'm learning french, and got pretty shocked when i was told it's 6 hours a week. thats A LOT, considering other subjects are 6 hours in all for two weeks.

oh well.

nus is full of stairs, if i havent mentioned it yet. for those of u who ever want to visit, feel free to msg me anytime. i have a five day week so i shall be in school daily (mon to fri only!) but i assure you this is not a trip you'd want to make unless the only other option is studying. haha

am in social sciences, doing in my first semester with french, sociology, south asian studies, political science and european studies. hey if i could i'd choose WAY diferent but theres certain ones u HAVE to take so yeah:)

ok thats abt it abt me for now. haha :)

five words - liquidated, momentum, security, foretell, decline

take care folks!
meghna:)

just one of those things

'I Hope You Dance...
This was written by an 83-year-old woman to her friend.

Dear Bertha,I

'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time working.

Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, or the first Amaryllis blossom.I wear my good blazer to the market. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries. I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank.

"Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.I'm not sure what others would've done had they known they wouldn't be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted. I think they would have called family members and a few close friends. They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for whatever their favorite food was.I'm guessing; I'll never know. It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them.

I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, tell myself that it is special.Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God.

"People say true friends must always hold hands, but true friends don't need to hold hands because they know the other hand will always be there."

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

happy birthday to you!

happy 41st birthday, singapore! :)

yes, i am amongst those who loves this country. true, i may sit and complain every now and then about stuff like the weather, the funny rules (like no swings in playgrounds now because they're 'dangerous', etc), the..the. well my complaining is pretty spontaneous.

but i still love this country which i call my home.

now i'm not going to impose my views on you or anything, but quite frankly, i'm sure you can think for yourself why it's such a great place to stay in. it may not have cheap shopping like in thailand or china, may be a lot smaller than places like the usa, may not allow gambling like malaysia, may not have the beautiful locations like switzerland, and may be a lot less than other countries. but it still still home not only because i spent most of my life after childhood here, but also because of the different kinds of food here, the racial harmony that isn't perfected but is much more reliable than in other countries, the clean, safe roads i know i can venture into without much fear, but definitely precaution. i call this home because this is where my friends and family are, and because i know that even when the going gets tough, the government will be there for me, even if they don't owe me a living. so what if we aren't liberal like the usa, or a welfare state like england used to be?

ok so a lot of the ndp songs aren't familiar to me anymore, because they;ve changed tons since my school days. but i still enjoy watching them, over and over again, and i swear i get goosebumps sometimes.

well. five words:
1. patriotic:)
2. democratic:)
3. dictate
4. sinusoidal
5. confession

well, enjoy your holidays! :)

i want to learn chinese

hello all again! my greatest apologies for not updating so often

been superbly busy with uni stuff. would you believe it, it hasn't even started and i'm going there daily so far, since monday. am very glad i visited u all on thursday itself:) but honestly, it's tiresome to travel from eunos to nus on a daily basis. i feel like knocking the nus architects too, really hard. i simply don't understand why they had to build an instiution so vastly attended on a bunch of slopes atop hills. now no offence to AHS, at least it's called Anglican HIGH School. on top of that, you can't help but keep getting lost because half the maps are old ones.

forget geography. the faculty i am in probably strives to make every freshman student's life complete utter hell. they're the only faculty to have SO MANY modules, so many divisions and so many majors. we have to bid for modules and courses so obviously we will be graduating seasoned gamblers. oh AND we have to bid for tutorials. all the while making our own timetable, which is not so great because a number of lesson timings clash and if u bid and are not successful you simply have your entire timetable messed up.

whoopee.

end of rant.

sorry about that. don't get the wrong idea. nus is a great place, really. but i'm in a ranting mood so HAH! :P

met some of you a few days back. oh no i MUST stress, please do not see me as any sort of role model, if u think i ever was one to you. don't get me wrong, i'm not some chain smoking, tatooed delinquent, but i am very non formal, very casual, and much less uptight than i was in school. u have to understand, AHS was a school and teachers have a code of conduct no one explained to me but i was supposed to know, but i am still just a teenager in my last teen year and wear jeans and casual tshirts and i make lots of mistakes and i get lost and all that jazz. just a less hormonally charged, more world wisely (not too much though) non adult, non child version of you guys.

:)

ahs revisited part two

to those of you not from 1C and 1K but who are here and obviously reading this, HELLO! :) am honoured that you decided to invest your time in this often pointless, five word vocab-bed, mindless and possibly yawn inducing site. i know most entries are just garble with no real issue being discussed, like nuclear war, hunger and famine, Republicans and Conservatives, charity, or any other kind of mind stimulating, worthy news or knowledge dispensed. i apologize, sincerely, for i suppose this ought to be the avenue for such. however i have Very Extremely limited knowledge of social current etc issues and shall have to brush up on them myself first. Still. do go and enrich yourself with everything you can. then you can help me post up stuff too, ex-student or not!

haha ok that is NOT me being lazy. i just want something worth reading here. that would. broaden your horizons, expand your views, etc etc etc.

everyone. go to www.channelnewsasia.com! :):):)

ahs revisited

hello all! was superb seeing most of you again yesterday:)

am trying (please be successful) to upload the pics but as you know i'm quite lost in all this. so here goes.

pics with 1K are above. for some reason the pics are coming at the top of the post and i can't find myself bothering to correct this over and over again (it takes a lot of time okkkaaayy). 1C's (those in the art room) are in the next (well i guess previous) post because DESPITE me patiently waiting two times over and not clubbing my computer, the pics claim to be uploaded but they're not there.

yep, i'm a superbly short tempered person. you guys just never saw it;)

rah i gotta learn to use this. properly.
and also learn how to get rid of the word verification thing i have to do all the time. how insulting. it fancies me a robot.

please please don't make me have to redo this.

Sunday, July 23, 2006

hello all! :)

am back from my (sorry previously unannounced) hiatus. was in the states for a bit. my first time there, and mighty exciting. good news girls. the guys there are way eligible. now don't misunderstand me, i'm not drawing comparisons here. but still;)

note how my standard of english typing in this blog has degraded. all my caps have gone. and i'm sure there's more. haha

how's the new english teacher now? be nice to her okaaayy. haha.

those of you who still voted jasmine tye, xie xie! :):) am very glad she's still in the competition, and do keep voting for her!

it's going to be miss ang's last week in ahs staring tml, so be nice to her too. finish all your work or u will end up in trouble with the next teacher (should be mrs hudd. be nice to her too. she just gave birth recently).

five words of this week:
1. sacrificial
2. bountiful
3. constricted
4. prolific
5. juxtapose

say a little prayer

hello once again!

three million five hundred and sixty two apologies for such a belated update! was away at camp the whole time, and even though it was simply at NUS, we seemed pretty far away from civilisation. guess it happens when you don't get to use the computer and phone and tv as often! :)

heard from some of you about your new teacher. ms trina right?
REMINDER: be nice to her. haha. trust me she's not out to get you. or hate you. or distribute green forms like rainwater. and she has a hard job, getting to try to know all of you ASAP, so be nice to her. haha. i bet most of you couldn't stand me at first either. heaven please let it be the opposite now:)

1K. i have yet to give you what i was supposed to long long ago. feels very stupid to give it now but if i meet ms ang anytime soon i shall pass it to her.
or maybe. not. haha

i still miss you guys tons daily, even though the day is pretty filled up with a lot of stuff.

can't imagine what you guys are curious about me for (HAHA) but any questions u have, be it about my personal life, help in english, or even maths or science, help in your personal problems or professional lives (being a student is an occupation, after all), feel free to email me. or call. or sms.
:)

btw. why are so many people annonymous? sigh.

5 words:
cherubim

till the next time,
i bid thee farewell!:)

school's a-starting!

two nights and a day to go before school restarts! :)

admit it. you miss it tons. forget the homework, that's not at all something you guys will remember once you leave. glad to see so many of you have blogs, because quite frankly, sec3 and 4 stick in your memory much more than lower sec does, which is a pity. in which case, you can always refer back to your blogs, jog your memory and all:)

very sad though. somehow my 1k peeps never seem to visit. and very few other 1c ones do. still.

1K whoever has to send me pictures send them! you can upload them and email to meghna1004@hotmail.com or send it to my hp number. WHICH i have given you:)

1C i'm in the process of getting the pics i took with you from ms ng (not eng!) so patience:)

terrible too. i still don't have a journal i update the way i wanted to. so much for practising what i preach. STILL i am (was) the teacher so you all shall listen to me! ;)

will be in camp the whole next week. i almost don't want to go anymore, but that's my amazing laziness talking. somehow, i suspect sloth would be the deadly sin most applicable to me. of course, i'm not too familiar with the other six either so i can't be too sure;)

BTW apparently a sloth is an animal who moves so slowly sometimes algae grows on it. hard to believe, but anything's possible:)

for those of you who still visit, and actually do this,
five vocab words:

1) verify
2) emulate
3) abominate
4) nimbus (yes you HP fans there is such a word)
5) providence

once again, be nice to your new English teacher, and don't bully him/her. nope i have no clue who it is but i'm pretty sure you'll have a good English semester. Don't forget this old dino though, at least not till we're old and greying and aged, with possible amnesia;)

Idols.

While we're on the topic of idols. Who's yours?

Honestly, you are perfectly entitled to having as many as you want. just please, make sure it's someone exerting POSITIVE influence.

Me. I have tons of ppl i admire. i wouldn't quite say they're my idols, but there are some people you just can't help but admire, for the most mundane to the most obvious reasons.

The dictionary.com definition of idol goes like this:
An image used as an object of worship.
A false god.
One that is adored, often blindly or excessively.
Something visible but without substance

which is why, rather than having idols, have people you admire for the right qualities.
and i don't mean who is the best in Maplestory or the like. duh.
i meant like those who embody your school core values. and other values:)

i admire/love/gush about/value/respect/have high regard for/etc lots of people. down to many of my friends. like for being amazing runners (hey i mean long distance runners who do like 20km a day. any idea how much stamina is reqd for that?). or for being gentlemanly. or for being modest. you get the idea.

friendships often need this. besides the normal, EXPECTED mutual respect you give each other, sometimes a dash more helps a lot. it's not a bad thing at all, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary.

so the next time you're having your normal interactions, do look out for the special qualities in people, and value them for it:)

till the next post,
adieu

Holidays

Sorry there hasn't been a post in the longest time ever. This is my third time writing out a new post, with the previous two not being uploaded by blogspot. Which, if you ask me, is direly stupid. Besides, what's with them asking me to validate my humanity?

Growl.

So holidays are finally here! Much as everyone loves school/work, everyone loves a holiday more. (I hope you all do!) There's tons happening this June, so if you are clueless and just rotting at home, read on!

First up, World Cup.
If you didn't know the World Cup is going on this June, give yourselves a hard whack on the head. How can you NOT know? Even I don't read the papers. That still cannot excuse you. Don't you go out and see the bus stops which celebrate Nike and their (quite ugly this year, actually) designs for the different teams? Don't you watch TV? Don't you have friends??
That said. It's going to be a great season. Thank Gosh it's in the holidays.

Singapore Idol.
I never watched even one episode of the previous season, not even the finals, where my school's choir (and duh my friends) took part. But this year, it's personal. If you still have no idea why, just vote for Jasmine Tye (number 6). Will update you on this further:)

Great Singapore Sale.
This. is. pure. heaven.
It's barely started, but check out the great buys already. I can't wait to spend my hard earned hard saved money, and then mourn its loss after i purchase what i will absolutely love and not regret buying. Let's hope my parents are equally understanding when they see the bills:)

Movies Galore.
Head down to the new cineplex. those of you who haven't been there, some advie. it's freezing there. BUT it's a gorgeous underdeveloped place, and the walls are probably the most fascinating bit of it. they have very funky comics:) Go together as a class, or in your own cliques, especially if you have money to burn, and have a movie marathon:)

Alternately, you can have sleepovers and the like. In fact, anything slack, chill out at the beach, catch the sunrise, go blading, GO FOR THE CHOCOLATE BUFFET AT FULLERTON, take the treetop walk, or hike up bukit timah to lose the extra weight you will be guaranteed to put on post Fullerton Chocolate Buffet, etc other things i'd love to do but will never find it in myself to get off the couch and bother enough.

Of course, there's always your HOMEWORK you can do. if i'm not wrong, holiday homework for english is reading to kill a mockingbird? not too sure, but get started on it. it's a nice book, but a bit slow at first.

DON'T invest all your time in MapleStory and other computer games. If you have to, crack your wits and efforts at..REVISION! haha. hey you think, and when you write you exercise you fingers, and it's less strenous on your eyes, and hey. it's actually beneficial in the future:)

Now i'm going to try to publish this post, but once bitten twice shy. so i'm going to SAVE this first so i don't have to retype everything like a mindless victim of insomnia and inactivity.

till then, take care, and have fun! :)
Ms Meghna

P.S. Your Original stories were given to ms ang to distribute to you all. hope she can get it to you ASAP:)

Post Exam

Now that exams are over, and you've possibly vested your energies in mindless computer games, movies, LAN gaming, maplestory, serial reruns, shopping (ok this one is optional. no one should EVER be able to get enough of shopping!), talking/complaining about exams and how they went, soccer, assorted other sports, etc, let me recommend to you a personal favourite timepasser (which i unfortunately have not indulged in for a long long time).

Reading.

Ok now that you are done guffawing, read me out. Reading is NOT a bad thing at all. In fact, there's nothing better than lying on a couch with a cup of hot chocolate on a cold day/night (of course this is temperamental in Singapore) and reading a really good book.

There's many genres. Thriller, chicklit, romance, etc. Take your pick. Now I understand that while I may be sounding like the library's promotions (and I assure you this has absolutely nothing at all to do with your respective class readerships), this is purely to entice you into realising how. Fun. Reading can be.

You enter new worlds, broaden your horizons, get new ideas (I swear I was going to tear all my hair out reading the same old plots in your compositions), learn more about the world and people and societies and the way people and their world's run, get a better grasp of English, get new Vocab into your system, find a way to pass time...
The list can go on because I am pretty long-winded:)

So get yourself a good book and if it's a hot day, make yourself some cold Milo. Find a good not-too-comfy couch (we don't want you to end up sleeping) and crack open the book.

And read. Don't just start stoning or staring into space.

To get you started, find meaningful books like Mitch Albom's Five People You Meet In Heaven, Bo or Tuesdays With Morrie.
If you want Lit texts, try The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I just read it over the weekend and it is. brilliant.
Alexandre Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo rocks too.

Of course, if you'd rather something lighter, help yourself to chicklit. Some plots are so ridiculous that they actually seem believable:) Like The Undomestic Goddess by I'mnottoosurewho.

Good Old-era books include Ken Follet's Dangerous Fortune.
Neil Humphreys writes very well too. He's a columnist for the Today paper and encompasses local humour in his writings. He's got a book of his compiled articles (well more than one book) like Stories from the Little Island or something similar. Sorry my memory fails me:P

Right before I spend any more time taking off books from the top of my mind, head to the nearest book and start reading.

I hope you are sufficiently bored enough to do so.

Salaam Namaste,
Ms Meghna

of sparklers and confetti

Exams are over, pop the champagne!
(ok no not really. you all are underage. pop the sparkly juice? haha:)

now that the Great Dreadfuls are over and done with, hope you had a fabulous time yesterday gallavanting across the country (well mostly TM right?:) and showing the world what a good time no-more oppressed students can have.

just hope no one went overboard on the fun and dished over to trouble:)

sorry to have to pull a downpour on you, but PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT SERVICE :

exam results will be given out starting next week on. fret not though. i'm sure most of you have done well in the exams:)

i'm actually supposed to be teaching you all now on, as in you do compres and summaries and compos and whatelsehaveyou. we'll see how it goes though.
haha:)

holidays beginning in two weeks. mighty long weekend upcoming too.
yay:)

take care,
ms meghna

English Journal - the real one. ie not blog.

This one goes to all the pupils who don't pay attention in my lessons (RAWR!) and need me to keep repeating instructions/myself. It's also dedicated to those of you who make my day by visiting this site religiously (of course I'm just saying this cuz I have no idea who comes here. Save for a few of you and I'm still awaiting the diamonds and chocolates;) and who should be studying for your exams (non English!) right now.

:)

So what's the English Journal all about?

Vital Statistics: at least the size of the AHS handbook (yes the one where the RULES are written)

Purpose: For you to write. Any missing pages must be accounted for because I don't trust all of you to appreciate that only tissue paper fulfils some functions and NOT EJ paper.

What's next: Fret not I am not going to pull a tyranny and force you to write pages and pages of words (DON'T try to cheat me and write in huge handwriting!). Here's what's going to happen. You will keep it in school, and every now and then for the next month at least you WILL be forced to write in it but only for 15 min each time. As is my fancy. Of course you can flood it with words if you want to but for the lazier/vocally inclined these 15min is mandatory.

Say what? : You write whatever suits your fancy. Predominantly English though. Write about your class, how much you love/hate them, your friends, your CCAs, favourite TV shows, exercise (though why ANYONE would enjoy physical torture is beyond my understanding), your pets, English and how lessons and Ms Meghna are, assorted other lessons and related teachers, how much you love chocolate, hate marking..
oops.
Well so you get the idea. Every now and then I will probably call for it just to look through. Please don't hesitate to write just about anything in it though. It'll be confidential and I will not pick on you/complain to your other teachers about you/hate you, although depending on the content I could still end up crying my heart out.

HAHA ok kidding just write whatever you want. I won't be in AHS much longer so worry not. Besides, I just hope to get you started on writing, and hopefully you will improve.

I've always wanted to keep a journal. Have one every year but I never get beyond the first two entries=___=

N.B. Journal is where you write landmark/special/specific events of your lives, in no regular order of date. Diary is where you update on your day to day life on a regular basis.

and as a rose I bid thou farewell
ms meghna:)

I've heard too many Labour Day jokes to give birth to another one.

Meredith Grey, Grey's Anatomy

"A couple of hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success. Never leave that till tomorrow, he said, which you can do today. This is the man who discovered electricity. You think more people would listen to what he had to say. I don't know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I'd have to say it has a lot to do with fear. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, sometimes the fear is just of making a decision, because what if you're wrong? What if you're making a mistake you can't undo? The early bird catches the worm. A stitch in time saves nine. He who hesitates is lost. We can't pretend we hadn't been told. We've all heard the proverbs, heard the philosophers, heard our grandparents warning us about wasted time, heard the damn poets urging us to seize the day. Still sometimes we have to see for ourselves. We have to make our own mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. We have to sweep today's possibility under tomorrow's rug until we can't anymore. Until we finally understand for ourselves what Benjamin Franklin really meant. That knowing is better than wondering, that waking is better than sleeping, and even the biggest failure, even the worst, beats the hell out of never trying."

No more random vocab for the span of your exam.
Do remind me to tell you all to
1) Bring your already purchased English Journal
2) If you're from 1K, bring your brochure assignments
3) Bring your Comprehension papers SIGNED BY PARENTS for me to go through.

Hope I remember this man. haha

Btw, I don't personally watch Grey's Anatomy. A pity, I'm sure, especially considering the rave reviews I've heard about it. Same goes for Lost, but I'm way too far behind to even dream of catching on now (particularly cuz it's GAH marking period). Desperate Housewives is only the occasional indulgence too.

So kids, when you grow older (not too much longer, time'll fly by you before you know it. Take it from an aged, ancient fogey) do not watch too much TV like me.
The Internet, though, is free and easy for use:)

Maybe. You guys can make up your own class time capsule. You know, where you all put something of yours into a cardboard box and wrap it up and store it till Sec 4, where you can tell the future Sec 1s to look at it and I don't know, know about your current life? Or you all can go through it yourselves in Sec 4, bring back the memories and whatnot.

We did that in Sec 1 (long long ago) and left a class list with our CCAs next to the individual names so we could be recognized/spotted/harrassed by our Sec1 junior class if they had any questions. We had left the box on the class cupboard and it surprisingly remained untouched till the right time. VERY surprising, but super delightful as well:)

Just a suggestion, remembering that 1K has, at a VERY extremely advanced time, begun their class angel-mortal game (where, I have no qualms being any of your mortals. haha:)

Of course, if you are reading this now, amidst your exams, SHAME ON YOU! You should be studying Science and Math and other mind numbing subjects that are nonetheless more enthusiasm inducing than English. Shoo! Now that English is over. I shall just continue on my own talking to myself like that crazy bag lady down the street feeding pigeons.

Of course, they thought Einstein was stupid/mad/a wastrel/an assortment of the above.
You never know.
;D

Till the next journal, where I shall chronicle some other insidiously abhorrent non-issue.

(Please NOBODY ask me about any GE06 or other assorted current issues that are featured in the papers. I'm not their most regular fan. Archie'll do just fine for me. Or SVH or the like. NO Jap anime. Or assorted other whaticallcrap)

Biding you a touch of genius!
Ms Meghna:)

Friday, April 28, 2006

Oh frabjous day, calooh calayh!

It's actually over.
Possibly your worst, most hated, boring, dry and drab subject is over.
(I say possibly, let's hope not though)

Haven't actually seen the Comprehension (yet) but heard about how hard it was, particularly the Vocab section. Fear not (well not too much) because you're not alone. You go through mass suffering:)

(just for Nicholas and the rest of the 1K sadists, I am not one)

Please do not ask me what I am marking, and ask for more marks. This is for a few reasons:

1. You may have scored magnificently, in which case extra marks will be out of the question. Think positive guys.
2. I have three million five hundred and sixty two scripts to mark. (THIS is an exaggeration, and I hope you used none of it in your situational writing!) ok but honestly I have a lot. A LOT. of scripts to mark, and much as we'd all like to believe you're the centre of the universe, let me break your heart and tell you, you're not (I, however, am). So much as you'd believe with utmost conviction that I remember just how well you fared or what you got or whether you did well, I PROMISE you any answer I give will be a fabricated one. I really cannot remember.
3. Chances are, I haven't marked your script.

..and assorted other reasons that I know exist but really simply can't be bothered to rack my brains about right now.

Particularly as I keep stealing glances at the stacks and sheer thickness of what I have to mark in the next week.
sigh.

Fret not, I am not alone. I sincerely hope you do not believe ONE BIT that you can slack off now, just because English is over. You still have Maths and Science and History and Geography and Literature and DNT and I'm not sure what else you may have to study for but the point is. Take the Labour Day holidays to mug it out and wait for Tuesday.

haha.
:)

1K, your English lesson with me on Tuesday will be taken over by Mrs Koh for Geography. May meet you for five minutes to collect your brochures (I forgot to record down your marks) but since I highly doubt the majority of you will be bringing it I will send you a reminder on Tuesday.

I also have to collect your Comprehensions to make sure your parents have signed them.

I'm supposed to teach you during the remaining English periods but I may just let you revise your other work so do bring something to revise just in case. Once again, if you need help I'll be able to help you out in all your subjects save for Lit and Geog. And maybe DnT. Of course, no Chinese allowed:)

Right, off I go then to mark. Hope you had a good Friday (slacking away I bet). Keep sleeping early and waking up early and studying hard the rest of the day.
(YEAH RIGHT)

See you!:)

I can't believe blogspot is STILL not letting me have a title.

Anyways, exams incoming, discussed this with you, but just as a reminder:

NO SLANG ALLOWED.

For those of you who have yet to realise how long winded I am, witness the following.

What is slang?
Simply put in English in exams, words teenagers (don't get me wrong. Adults also have slang. They're just not the ones who take the exams) use and think are cool or words that are a testimony to their coolness (trust me, when you grow older, half of what you think is SUPER COOL or happening or whathaveyou will just be a source of embarrassment. Trust me on this one)

examples of slang:
  • cool (unless you're talking about the weather or temperature)
  • happening
  • whatever
  • like in every other sentence
  • sucks
  • pissed off
  • freak out
  • vulgarities, which you think are not vulgarities (eg. sh*t)
  • refrain from using words like stupid and idiot too
  • stead/steady
  • ex (you can use ex-girlfriend/boyfriend. Not just ex)
  • assorted colloquial(vocab word!) phrases, including Hokkien/Teochew/Cantonese/Malay/etc phrases. If you have difficulty in determining what is acceptable, ask yourself if someone British would understand what you are talking about.
  • yakking away
  • BGR
  • bf/gf
  • lurve/luv (say love. L-O-V-E)
  • loser
  • dawg
  • wanna/lemme/gotta/gtg/ttyl/cya/etc shortcuts you lazily use informally
  • fella
  • kid, mom, dad, guy, gal (use child, mother, father, boy, girl)
  • moron
  • CMI (can't make it)
  • etc. of course, being the ancient, stodgy and fossilated teacher you all think I am (vocab words galore!) I do not have quite as many slang words up my sleeve. Aim to be like me in the exams. Use NO slang at all. No, I don't care about your abundant knowledge either, and once again, if you DARE come up to me with blatant profanities and ask if it is acceptable you will be in trouble. Further elaboration will come with experience. You have been warned.

Also avoid bigoted views. I've explained to you what they are, but if you're still unclear, please head to your new best friend, www.dictionary.com and check it out. (They should just pay me for this advertising).

Double post in a day. Not bad, huh? Maybe I'll triplicate it. Maybe blogspot will let me have a title.
Or not.

EDIT: Ok I figured out how to link. And get title:)

right i'm finally here again after weeks.

exams are upcoming, and will be over soon (within two days, i promise you!) try to focus hard on them, they're the first major exams you will have in AHS.

I really should start writing the way you should and I'd be marking ie. proper capital letters in place, punctuation and tense correct, and grammar more or less error free.

Your comprehension passages are still held hostage by me, although I have finished marking them. I'll try to get them to you asap. Trust me, I have no particular fascination or obsession with them:)

By the way, contractions like I'd, can't, we're, etc (yes that too. You have to spell it out as et cetera) are not allowed by you. I, on the other hand, will allow myself to use it for personal ease:)

I haven't posted the five random vocab words, so here goes:

1) contention
2) exponent
3) emancipated
4) unduly
5) discerning

P.S. transparent and translucent are NOT the same thing.

I understand some of you know what these words mean, but ask yourself, if it were to be asked in the vocab section of the Comprehension passage, would you be able to explain it, in context, in seven words or less?

Of course, they aren't just for the vocab component. You never know, it may just come in handy in composition and summary and what have you as well:)

Once again, it's not compulsory to look them up. If you feel lazy to hunt your dictionary and subsequently the given words, head down to www.dictionary.com and find it, quick and easy! You can also use the thesaurus function. Plus the Word Of the Day. I'm not sure what other features may interest you (primarily because I don't know my way around the site. Let me clarify though, I may be a blog-toot, and a techno-toot, but I do know how to navigate my way through most websites. This has just never retained my interest)

Excuse the ugly layout. Besides being ignorant of how to glorify/beautify the template, I have better things to do (or more important, at least. Like marking. Marking. And more marking. NB. Never begin sentences with and. I just did but I get to. hehe)

Just a note, when do you use it's and its?

it's - in the context of John's. Or in the context of it is.
its - every other time. For example, she saw its tail wagging.

Right, for those of you whose parents are disapproving of you sitting at the computer at this point in time (REMINDER: EXAMS UPCOMING!), be happy because you will probably use this site as an excuse to play computer games, chat, etc on the pretext of being good students and reading up on English. On the other hand. Try not to. They have your best interests at heart. However much you are convinced that chatting will indeed improve your English (yeah right. Maybe in Singlish/slang exams, where grammar, punctuation and the like are irrelevant. u gemme hor?), believe me when I say you're wrong. Trust me. It's very tedious for me to type properly here, when all i use when chatting is wrong english like no caps n all sorta slang tt'd juz freak out any eng cher hu may mark smtg like tis. dun say u confirm wun use liddat one cuz like. wait till exam time u wanna rush rush finish evtg then write anyhow oso neva realise.

Alright, till the next time!:)

P.S. Why am I unable to have a title for this? Blogspot hates me. Growl.
